One of Hong Kong’s best known Lunar New Year traditions is turning the character 福 (Fook) upside down. In Cantonese, 倒 (Dou: upside down) sounds almost identical to 到 (Dou: to arrive). Turn the character upside down and it creates a spoken blessing: 「福到: “Fortune has arrived.” It’s a simple piece of Cantonese wordplay that has decorated the city for generations, welcoming good luck into the year ahead.
